Urgent News for FCOP Members

Greetings members of the FCOP Local 5000. I hope the holidays were joyous for all.  I am writing a quick note to update you on your member benefits as I know there is a lot of concern.

As you have probably heard, a leadership vacuum has occurred effective January 1, 2012. President Mike Scanlon realized this and requested assistance from IUPA in the form of Voluntary Administratorship. Basically, it’s a request for the IUPA to take over the daily running of the Union until such time as new leadership can be found.  The IUPA has appointed former International Vice President Dennis Slocumb to manage the local and its finances, and the IUPA is providing the assistance of its professional staff to make sure that the local continues to run smoothly.  Due to my prior terms as President, as well as his, Scott Durham and I will be serving as Interim President and Vice President. Neither of us sought the positions, rather we were asked to by the IUPA in order to effect a seamless transition.

The important thing for you to know is that your benefits will remain in effect completely during this time frame.  Local 5000 has retained John Carroll to represent our members in emergency incidents and in serious discipline cases and we have retained an attorney specializing in labor law to provide advice to our members on labor issues and in discipline cases where labor expertise is required.  We are also continuing to provide the $125,000 in life insurance to each of our members.  I hope you see that Local 5000 is thriving and alive and well. We will be seeking new leaders to mentor and bring on board. We are also taking measures to assure that what recently happened, never happens again.  As soon as we get through this the IUPA will conduct elections for permanent union officers.

Stay tuned for more information. Our website is going to be revamped and will include regular updates. We are also creating a Facebook page and plan on using twitter to assure that communication with members is much better.

Stay Safe,

Marshall Thielen

Interim President
